Family to seek compensation after nearly-fatal labour errors?

16/08/2010

A family from Croydon could soon seek the services of an injuries solicitor after serious failings were made by a hospital.

Saima Fiaz and her son Nauman Saqib, from Upper Norwood, Croydon, could both have died while she was giving birth at St George's Hospital, the Croydon Advertiser reports.

Ms Fiaz had to have a caesarean for the birth of her eldest son, which made it more likely that she could have difficulties during her second birth.

Despite this fact, she was left alone with a student midwife who was only on her second day in the job.

During the birth, her caesarean scar ripped open and her unborn son was starved of oxygen for at least ten minutes.

Ms Fiaz and her husband still do not know if their son will grow up with disabilities as a result of this.

"My wife and son could have died because of their negligence. We'll never be able to get over this. How can we forgive them for this tragic incident?" Ms Fiaz's husband Saqib Thandi said.

The South Wales Argus recently reported that the family of a girl starved of oxygen during her birth had launched a compensation claim against the NHS.
