Drink driving 'pushes up insurance premiums'

06/12/2011

Many car accident compensation claims are likely to result from collisions with drunk drivers.

Department for Transport figures showed that six per cent of all road casualties occurred in accidents in which a driver was over the legal alcohol limit.

Furthermore, 16 per cent of all road fatalities occur when drink driving is involved.

Research conducted by comparison site MoneySupermarket has revealed that having a drunk driving conviction could push up the cost of car insurance significantly, with some finding it difficult to secure any insurance in the future.

It was found that motorists with such convictions could see the cost of their cover soar from an average of £424 per year to £784.

Peter Harrison, insurance spokesperson at the site, commented: "This is the time of year for parties and festivities, many people will be choosing to celebrate with a tipple or two over the Christmas and New Year season.

"Ensuring you have adequate travel arrangements in place to get you home is essential as driving while under the influence should not be an option in any circumstances."
