Dodgy DIY 'could lead to injury claims'

06/04/2009

Homeowners could face compensation claims over dodgy DIY carried out during the Easter holidays, a leading insurance provider has warned.

Esure says the bank holiday weekend is a popular time for people to have a go at fixing up their properties themselves, but reminds them to have a good grasp of the basics before attempting major refurbishments.

Common mishaps include poorly-laid patios and brickwork in outdoor areas, which could cause guests to trip over and claim compensation against the homeowner.

Bonfires which can get out of hand and cause damage to a neighbour's property may also be a problem, suggests the insurer.

Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure, advises people to take precautions to avoid injury to themselves and others.

"Make sure you're familiar with the basics before getting your hands dirty," he comments, adding: "If in doubt, hire in professional help."

The number of DIY-related injuries may see a rise in the near future, as figures from Lloyds TSB show that the credit crunch is forcing many to undertake home improvements themselves.ADNFCR-2070-ID-19109452-ADNFCR
