Cyclist awarded injury compensation for pothole

A Berkshire cyclist has been awarded £7,600 in injury compensation after riding his bike into a pothole.

Ian Davis suffered broken ribs, a dislocated shoulder and knee injuries in the incident, which took place in February 2006.

The 46-year-old was unable to work for two weeks following the injury and was dependent on his partner's earnings for six weeks after that.

"I'm still able to cycle but due to the pain in my left shoulder and arm, I can't ride for long periods like I used to," adds Mr Davis.

West Berkshire county council denied liability for the injury, but Mr Davis' injury solicitors were able to prove in court that the council had breached its duties by failing to fill the hole and owed him compensation.

The Local Government Association reported in February that the winter's severe weather caused a large outbreak of potholes on Britain's roads, and road users are being encouraged to contact their local councils if they see one.
