Crane firm narrowly avoids injury compensation claim

18/08/2010

A crane company has narrowly avoided being at the centre of an injury compensation claim after a very heavy load crashed to the ground next to a footpath.

London Tower Crane Hire & Sales Limited was using one of its large machines for construction work at Hertfordshire Regional College in Turnford, near Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, on November 3rd 2007.

A hook broke off the tower crane, causing its four-tonne load to fall 36 metres to the ground in an area that is regularly used by students.

The company, which has a head office at Elstree Way, Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, was fined GBP 18,000 by Hertford Magistrates Court and ordered to pay GBP 15,837.45 in costs.

It could have had to pay out even more money, however, if somebody had been involved in the accident and made an injury compensation claim.

Back in June, the Chester Chronicle reported that Lisa Walker and her 12-year-old son Louis made a compensation claim after they were injured when a concrete block fell from a crane.
