Corby families win right to seek birth defects compensation

A group of families in Corby have won the right to seek injury compensation after a number of children were born with physical defects.

On July 29th a judge at the High Court ruled that 16 young people born with disabilities including missing fingers, heart defects and skin conditions can seek injury compensation from Corby Council, which is currently facing a legal bill of some GBP 6.6 million.

The sufferers claim their disabilities are a result of their mothers' exposure to toxic chemicals when the Corby steelworks underwent major redevelopment works between 1985 and 1997.

However, the judge found that the council had not failed in its duties after August 1997, meaning the two youngest children will not be able to claim compensation.

The case has echoes of the compensation deal offered to thalidomide victims in 1972, which saw a package worth £11.85 million offered to 340 children born with physical deformities.
