Car accident compensation - MP calls for harsher penalties for uninsured drivers

26/09/2011

A Lincolnshire MP has called for harsher penalties to be imposed on people who are driving without insurance.

Karl McCartney, Conservative MP for Lincoln, told the BBC that there is a need within the industry to be far stricter with people who have either not paid for insurance or who are driving after being banned.

These people are driving up premiums for every other motorist in the same manner as those who make illegitimate claims for whiplash injury and other ailments.

Her calls followed a survey which showed that 78 per cent of people thought that uninsured drivers involved in serious accidents should receive an automatic prison sentence, with 12 per cent having been involved in an accident with an uninsured driver themselves.

It comes after Otto Thoresen, the Association of British Insurers director general, recently noted that the increasing number of people claiming for whiplash injuries in the UK is driving up the cost of insurance.
