Building firm fined GBP 1k after man injures hand in accident at work

07/09/2010

A building firm has been fined GBP 1,000 after one of its employees injured his hand in an accident at work.

Rondeo Schoeman, 32, from Tottenham, was working for Maplestead Limited of Orchard Gate in Greenford, Ealing, when the accident took place.

He was machining a wooden handrail when the blades of the spindle moulder he was using pulled his hand towards the cutter tools.

Mr Schoeman suffered severe damage to his left hand during the accident and had to spend a month in hospital, undergoing several operations.

Health and Safety Executive inspector Jack Wilby said: "It is the responsibility of all companies to make sure that this work is properly planned and that adequate supervision and training is provided."

Earlier this month, two of Lupton Fabrications Ltd's company directors were fined a total of GBP 2,001 after one of their employees had his hand crushed in a hydraulic press.
