Builder fined for unsafe working at height

10/03/2010

Construction companies have once again been reminded of the danger of work injuries and related injury compensation claims after a Merseyside builder was fined for working at height without safety equipment.

Charles Molloy, of Molloy Building Contractors, was prosecuted and fined GBP 1,500 by the Health and Safety Executive after an inspector spotted him and another man on the roof of the Black Horse Hotel.

The men were not wearing harnesses or any other kind of safety equipment, while no scaffolding had been erected to ensure the safety of the workers.

Mr Molloy was also found to have ignored advice about his working practices from an Environmental Health Officer just days before he was caught.

"When we visited the site and saw both men still working on the roof without safety equipment after previous warnings, we had no choice but to take legal action," commented HSE inspector Sandra Tomlinson.

The window cleaners of Britain's tallest building, One Canada Square at Canary Wharf, recently gave their backing to HSE's Shattered Lives campaign, which aims to reduce slips and trips in the workplace.ADNFCR-2070-ID-19661766-ADNFCR
