Boy who lost eye receives GBP 50k compensation

16/08/2010

A boy who lost his eye following a mistake made at Northampton General Hospital has been awarded GBP 50,000 in injury compensation.

Harvey Dellar was urgently referred by an ophthalmologist to the hospital in 2008 when he was just 12 months old.

Injury solicitors working on behalf of the boy's parents claim that Harvey should have been seen by a specialist within two weeks but, due to an administrative mistake, he was seen 11 weeks later.

By this time the cancerous tumour spotted by the ophthalmologist had spread so much that Harvey had to have his right eye removed.

"My son may not have lost his eye if he had been treated and diagnosed more quickly, following the optician's concerns," said Harvey's mum, Caroline Haywood.

Earlier this month, the South Wales Argus reported that the parents of a girl left severely disabled after being starved of oxygen at birth had made a compensation claim against the NHS.
