Bakeware firm fined GBP 10k over accident at work

06/09/2010

A bakeware firm from Nottingham has been fined GBP 10,000 after an employee was involved in an accident at work.

The 33-year-old welder from Ilkeston was working for Fluorocarbon Bakeware Systems Ltd on December 16th 2008 when the incident took place.

He was cutting metal when a spark ignited vapours from a nearby can of thinner, causing the can to explode and showering the man with hot liquid.

The man sustained 60 per cent burns during the accident, which Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspector Sian Tiernan termed "entirely preventable".

"HSE's investigation showed that there was little in the way of direct supervision of the work and no risk assessment was undertaken for the activities carried out in the workshop," she added.

Last week, a man who was set on fire in an accident at work was awarded GBP 4,000 in injury compensation.

George Forbes, 62, of Nigg, Aberdeen, was working for Graeme W Cheyne (Builders) Ltd when the incident took place on November 11th 2008.
