Accident at work leaves man with long-term injuries
26/08/2010A man has been left with long-term injuries after being involved in an accident at work.
Steven McColgan, 37, from Edinburgh, was working for Laing O'Rourke Construction Limited when the accident took place on October 20th 2006.
Part of an unsupported working platform broke under his feet, causing him to fall 21 metres to the ground and suffer serious multiple injuries to his head and body.
Laing O'Rourke Construction Ltd was fined GBP 50,000 and ordered to pay costs of GBP 13,756 whereas Expanded Structures Ltd was fined GBP 75,000 and ordered to pay costs of GBP 14,154.
Health and Safety Executive inspector Victoria Wise said: "Laing O'Rourke Construction Ltd and Expanded Structures Ltd failed in their duty of care to Mr McColgan, who was lucky to survive the fall."
Earlier this month, Moulton Bulb Company Ltd was fined GBP 6,000 after one of its employees fell around three metres to the ground, injuring his shoulder.
